Shooting in Godshill: unit bases and access

Godshill is about 5 miles south of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. We set up the roaster at homes, halls, workplaces and venues in Godshill and the surrounding area. We bring hog roasts to all 125 towns and villages in the Isle of Wight. We cater events right across the region, from Godshill to Southampton (20 miles away).

Nearby historic houses include Sheat Manor (2.5 miles north-west) and Haseley Manor (2.6 miles north-east). If you’re shooting at a historic house, the roaster will need a base agreed with the property. With the sea within about 4 miles, coastal shoots need a sheltered base, so plan where crew will eat.

We bring hog roasts to shoots all over the PO38 postcode area and the streets around it. Streets in the area include High Street, Jubilee Close and Yarborough Close, and a shoot on any of them works with a garden, drive or yard for the roaster. We also bring hog roasts to shoots in Sandford (1 mile east), Rookley Green (1 mile north-west), Rookley (2 miles north-west), Whiteley Bank (2 miles east) and Merstone (2 miles north). We also serve nearby towns such as Newport (5 miles north), Ryde (7 miles north-east), Cowes (9 miles north), Sandown (4 miles east), Shanklin (4 miles east) and Ventnor (4 miles south-east). For a shoot at a remote spot, let us know early and we will plan the trip.

Well-known places in the area include Whitecroft Hospital (3.2 miles north-west) and Museum of Country And Agriculture (2.6 miles north-east). Green spaces nearby include Alverstone Mead and Stenbury Down.

  • Local pubs include The Essex pub (under half a mile south-east)

Planning the cooking spot

The right spot for the roaster makes everything easier. Ideally:

  • A route for our vehicle
  • A safe distance from kit
  • Somewhere for crew to eat if it rains

Godshill is a more remote spot, so tell us early and we’ll plan the journey.

Not sure about the cooking spot? Send us a photo and we’ll tell you honestly.

Godshill questions

What about windy coastal sites?

Yes. We roast under cover and choose a sheltered spot where we can.

What’s the nearest station to Godshill?

Shanklin station, about 3.5 miles east of the centre.

Can you set up at the unit base?

A level outdoor spot clear of trucks and kit, agreed with locations.

Does the roaster have to be outside?

The roaster always stays outside, under cover, at a safe distance from walls and tents. We can often serve indoors if the venue agrees.

What about a wrap party?

We do, with lamb or chicken if you like.

Do you do DIY hog roast hire?

Yes, for confident cooks. We will explain the details with your quote.

What space does the roaster need?

A level, open area outdoors with room for the roaster, a gazebo and a carving table, away from buildings, marquee walls and overhanging trees. We’ll check it with you before booking.

Can you cater in Godshill?

We do. Send us the address and we’ll check the date.

What a hog roast costs

Here’s what affects the price:

  • The journey to the venue
  • How easy it is to reach the spot
  • Menu choices and extras
  • How many people are eating

What you pay covers the meat, the chef and staff, and hours of roasting. A long, slow roast means an early start, and the quote reflects that.

Getting an accurate quote

To check availability and the cooking area, tell us:

  • The address or postcode
  • Any venue rules
  • Rough numbers
  • Any extras, such as lamb, chicken or china

Every shoot is quoted on its own, because numbers, menu, serving time and travel vary. Tell us about your shoot for a quote: send us your details through our quote form.

Choosing a hog roast caterer

A hog roast compared with other options

Compared with ordering in, we’re already there when lunch is called. A hog roast is often good value for a crowd, because one whole roast feeds plenty of people. Extras, china and longer service add to it.

Why Godshill hosts choose us

  • Crackling for everyone who wants it
  • Timed around your day
  • An itemised quote
  • Staff to serve, so you don’t have to

Working with your venue

For venues and planners, we can fit around your other suppliers.

If you are booking for a workplace, check with facilities about gas equipment and vehicle access. We work to the site’s rules.

What comes off the roaster

Halloumi and vegetable skewers (V)

Our vegetarian option is halloumi and vegetable skewers: squeaky, salty cheese with colourful veg.

Vegan burger or sausage (Ve)

Tell us how many vegans to expect, and we’ll plan the vegan burgers or sausages.

Looking after everyone

We give full allergen information for every dish. To make the most of it:

  • Share the allergen list with the crew
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if needed
  • Collect crew dietary needs from the call sheet
  • Stuffing usually contains gluten

Name a contact for the day.

Gluten-free rolls are available on request.

How the day works

The secret is time: hours of gentle heat make the pork soft and juicy while the skin turns into crackling. Then it rests briefly before our chef carves. In December, daylight in Godshill ends around 4:00pm, so the unit base needs lighting for late service. Summer shoots have daylight until about 9:20pm.

  1. Production sends us the location and call times.
  2. We check access to base and quote.
  3. The roast starts early.
  4. We carve fast on the lunch call.
  5. We pack away straight after.

Getting ready for the day

  • Measure the narrowest gate or passage
  • Make sure we can wheel the roaster to the spot
  • Choose a level, open spot outdoors for the roaster
