How our film set catering works in Haylands
Crews can be big, and carving serves a crowd fast. Rolls or plates, salads and potatoes make a proper lunch. Whether it’s farm and estate locations and period drama shoots, we can cook spit-roast lamb, rotisserie chicken and new potatoes for your crew.
Around Haylands, locations can be rural. Tell us about the route to base. The carving happens right in front of your crew, so every roll gets hot pork and a piece of crackling.

What affects the price in Haylands
There is no fixed price list, since every event is different. The main factors are:
- The number of people
- The date and time of year
- The menu and extras such as lamb or chicken
- The journey to the venue
What you pay covers the meat, the chef and staff, and hours of roasting. Slow roasting means we are on site for much of the day, and the quote reflects that.
What to tell us
A few details help us give you an accurate quote. Here’s what’s useful:
- Allergies we should know about
- The date and when you’d like to eat
- A photo of the cooking area
- Any venue rules
Every shoot is quoted on its own, because numbers, menu, serving time and travel vary. Tell us about your shoot for a quote: send us your details through our quote form.

Haylands: your questions answered
Can you roast near the sea around Haylands?
Yes, of course. Wind is something we plan for: a sheltered spot and secure cover.
What’s the nearest station to Haylands?
Ryde St Johns Road station, about 0.9 miles north-east of the centre.
Can you work around our timings?
Within reason, we can. Keep us posted on the day and we will adjust.
Do you leave the area tidy?
We pack everything away after service, so you’re not left with the mess.
Can you work to the call sheet?
We plan the roast to your lunch call, and we’ll adjust where we can.
What space does the roaster need?
Enough level ground outdoors for the roaster and a serving table under cover, and a way to wheel everything in. Send us a photo if you’re unsure.
How do we prepare?
A clear, level cooking spot, a route to wheel the equipment in and a contact for the day. We bring everything else.
How do you work out quantities?
The roast is chosen to suit how many you are feeding, so tell us your best estimate. We’ll confirm the menu in the quote.
Where the roaster can go in Haylands

- A level area at base
Haylands is a more remote spot, so tell us early and we’ll plan the journey.

Planning a shoot in Haylands

We cover all 125 towns and villages across the Isle of Wight, from the larger towns to small villages. We cater events right across the region, from Haylands to Southampton (about 17 miles away).
Crew coming by rail can use the station: the nearest station is Ryde St Johns Road station, about 0.9 miles north-east. With the sea within about 2 miles, coastal shoots need a sheltered base, so plan where crew will eat.
We cater shoots across PO33 and the streets around it. We can cater a shoot on streets such as Play Lane, Pell Lane and Upton Road or the roads around them, as long as there’s somewhere outside to cook. If your venue is just outside Haylands, we also cover Upton (1 mile south-west), Ryde (1 mile north-east), Oakfield (1 mile east), Binstead (1 mile north-west) and Elmfield (1 mile east). Further out, we also cater in Newport (6 miles west), Cowes (6 miles north-west), Sandown (4 miles south), Shanklin (6 miles south), Ventnor (9 miles south) and East Cowes (5 miles north-west). - Local schools include Ryde Academy (less than half a mile north) and Ryde School with Upper Chine (0.8 miles north-east)
- Pubs nearby include The Falcon pub (0.5 miles north-east)
How the day works
Serving is straightforward: our chef carves and our staff fill the rolls or plates, and sides go out at the same time. When everyone has eaten, we clear up and leave the spot tidy. In December, daylight in Haylands ends around 4:00pm, so the unit base needs lighting for late service. In summer, light lasts until about 9:20pm.
- Send us the location, dates and lunch time.
- We check access to base and quote.
- We set up at base and roast through the morning.
- We carve fast on the lunch call.
- We clear our spot.
Preparing for the day
- Pick a flat, open area outside for cooking
- Keep the spot clear of buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches
- Choose someone to meet us on arrival
Ask for a quote
It is easy to get a price: tell us when, where, how many and what time you’d like to eat. We’ll reply with a clear price and what’s included. Use our quote form.
