How our hog roast for events works in Isle of Dogs

Shows and festivals last all day, and a hog roast can serve through the day. Popular choices include hog roast rolls, crackling and a vegan burger or sausage, and we are regularly asked to cater church and village fêtes and town and village days.

In Isle of Dogs, a hog roast suits school fairs and street parties. Our chef carves in front of your visitors, so every roll gets hot pork and a piece of crackling.

Who books hog roast for events in Isle of Dogs?

It’s food people can carry round the event.

Our roaster has been booked for a wide mix of occasions near Isle of Dogs, including:

  • Summer fêtes
  • Charity days
  • Country shows
  • Community days and street fairs

A school like Harbinger Primary School can book a hog roast for a fair, fun run or sports day.

Questions to ask before booking

  • How long the roast takes and when they’ll arrive
  • Travel and any London charges
  • Exactly what’s included in the price
  • What the cooking area needs: space, cover and access

Read the checklist

What comes off the roaster

Rolls and gluten-free rolls

A hog roast roll is designed to be eaten in the hand. Gluten-free rolls can be provided on request.

Rotisserie chicken

Golden rotisserie chicken goes into rolls or onto plates.

Looking after everyone

With a bit of planning, dietary needs are easier to handle. A few tips:

  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if you expect coeliac visitors
  • Check other traders aren’t all selling pork
  • Plan separately for halal if needed
  • Show allergens at the stall

Give us a contact on the day, especially for big events.

Add rotisserie chicken for visitors who don’t eat pork.

Full catering or machine hire?

DIY hire works best when someone in the family loves cooking. For bigger or more formal events, catering takes the pressure off.

Roasting a whole hog yourself is possible, but it takes hours of attention, from early set-up to carving at the end. A catered hog roast means you can enjoy the day.

A hog roast compared with other options

At large shows, ask us about the expected crowds early, so we can plan. Compare like for like: the menu, sides, service time, staffing, crockery and travel. The cheapest quote is not always the best value.

Why us?

  • Slow-roasted at your venue, not reheated
  • Self-contained: roaster, cover and serving kit
  • Carved by our chef in front of your visitors
  • Planned to your running order

See our prices page and the cost guide.

What the cooking area needs

The roaster needs the right spot, because it cooks outside for several hours, so a few things are worth checking:

  • A level pitch with firm ground
  • Event approval for hot-food traders
  • Clearance from other stalls and tents

Isle of Dogs is in London, within the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and access can be tight: tell us about side or rear access, steps and parking for our vehicle.

If you are unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think before you book.

Popular choices

  • Vegan burger or sausage (Ve)
  • Rotisserie chicken
  • Halloumi skewers (V)
  • Hog roast rolls
  • Crackling
  • Coleslaw
  • Stuffing and apple sauce

What happens on the day

We work to your timings. If things run late, we can hold the cooked roast for a while before carving, so keep us posted on the day. In December, Isle of Dogs is dark by about 3:55pm, so the pitch needs good lighting and a clear route for the queue.

  1. Tell us about the event.
  2. We confirm the pitch and send a price.
  3. The roast starts before the gates open.
  4. We carve to order through the day.
  5. We leave the pitch clean.

Before we arrive

  • Ensure we can wheel the roaster to the spot
  • Keep the spot clear of buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches
  • Tell us about narrow gates or side passages

Questions from Isle of Dogs

Could you cook in Mudchute Park and Farm?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, usually the council, and many parks don’t allow cooking. Ask them first, and tell us what they say.

Yes, if the school is happy for a hog roast on site. Send us the date and where the roaster would go.

Can we hire the machine and cook it ourselves?

Yes, we hire out the hog roast machine. We’ll confirm what comes with it and how to use it.

Do you cover Isle of Dogs?

We do. Tell us the venue or postcode and we will check the date.

Can you sell directly to visitors?

That depends on the event. Let us know how you’d like it to work and we’ll discuss the options.

Do you clear up?

We pack everything away after service, and we take our equipment with us.

What’s the price?

Numbers, menu and travel decide the price. Tell us your date and we will send a price.
