DIY versus a catered hog roast

Catered or DIY? Catered means we do everything: roasting, carving, serving and clearing. With hire only, you do the cooking yourself.

Some hosts try a barbecue instead, but someone has to stand at the grill all day. A hog roast cooks in one go and is carved for everyone.

About our hog roast for events in Kent Street

How the food is paid for depends on the event: a catered package paid by the organiser, or a stall selling to visitors. Tell us how you’d like it to work. We’re often asked to cater tournaments and sports days and community days and street fairs, with hog roast rolls, a vegan burger or sausage and rotisserie chicken.

A fête near Kent Street might be on a field with no mains power; the roaster runs on gas, so that’s fine. Everything we need to roast, carve and serve comes with us, and we leave the spot tidy when we go.

Prices and what affects them

We do not use a fixed price list, because every event is different. What matters most:

  • Time on site
  • Season and day of the week
  • Plates or china
  • Distance from us

Weekday and off-season dates can be easier to book, and the menu you choose makes a difference too. Tell us your budget and we’ll suggest what works.

Details that help

The more we know, the more accurate the quote. Please include:

  • The venue or postcode
  • Your date and serving time
  • Anything the venue has asked for
  • Which meats and sides you’d like

Getting a quote is simple: date, place, numbers and serving time. We’ll reply with a clear price and what’s included. Fill in our quote form.

About the food

Rotisserie chicken

Golden rotisserie chicken goes into rolls or onto plates.

Vegan burger or sausage (Ve)

Let us know numbers for the vegan option, and we’ll plan the vegan burgers or sausages.

Before you choose a spot

Planning the cooking spot is the key. Check these:

  • A firm way on and off the field
  • A queuing area
  • Permission for cooking on the site

If you are unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we’ll say what we think.

What we serve

Planning for dietary needs

Standard rolls and stuffing contain gluten, so ask for gluten-free rolls if you need them. Other tips:

  • Remember stuffing generally contains gluten
  • Let us know if many visitors are vegetarian
  • Show allergens at the stall
  • Check other traders are not all selling pork

Tell us about ground conditions, especially after rain.

Add rotisserie chicken for visitors who don’t eat pork.

The process

The secret is time: the meat cooks gently until it’s tender while the skin turns into crackling. Then it rests briefly before our chef carves. For an autumn event in Kent Street, sunset is around 7:05pm in late September, so plan lighting if you are trading into the evening.

  1. It starts with your event date, site and expected numbers.
  2. We check the pitch and any paperwork, then quote.
  3. On the day we set up under cover and get the hog on.
  4. We carve rolls to order as the queue moves.
  5. We pack up and leave the pitch tidy.

Preparing for the day

  • Name a contact for the day
  • Think about shelter for your visitors
  • Check there is nothing overhead or close by that could catch the heat

Getting a price

The quickest way to get a price is to tell us the date, where the event is and roughly how many. A picture of where the roaster could go helps us check the space. Fill in our quote form.

FAQs for Kent Street

How far is Kent Street from London?

Roughly 37 miles from the centre of London.

Do you cater at venues in the South Downs National Park?

Yes. Some venues there have rules about cooking and vehicles, so check with yours. We will work to whatever the site needs.

Can you cater in Kent Street?

We do. Tell us the venue or postcode and we’ll confirm availability.

Can you help with a fundraiser?

We are happy to talk it through.

Can we hire the machine and cook it ourselves?

We do, if you’re happy to roast and carve yourself. We will explain the details with your quote.

How far ahead should we book?

Popular dates go early. But do ask even at short notice: fill in our quote form.

Is electricity needed?

Mainly a pitch and access. We bring the rest.

What about coeliacs?

We can supply gluten-free rolls on request. We’ll give you full allergen information for every dish.

For planners, venues and organisers

Many venues set rules for outside caterers, from approved lists to where a gas roaster can go. Check early, and pass on anything they need from us.

If the event is on someone else’s land, you will need the landowner’s permission for cooking and vehicles. Sort that first.

Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

Compared with a volunteer-run kitchen, we take the cooking off your volunteers. What you pay covers the meat, the chef and staff, and hours of roasting. A long, slow roast means an early start, which is built into the price.

Why us?

  • Our staff serve and clear
  • Rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Timed around your day
  • Salads, potatoes and coleslaw to go with it
