Hog roast for events for Viables

About our hog roast for events in Viables

For a school fair, you want food families will queue for. There are options for most visitors. We serve a vegan burger or sausage, halloumi skewers and crackling, and we are frequently booked for community days and street fairs and agricultural and country shows.

For events in a place like Viables, one hot-food trader most people like makes life easy. A hog roast does that. Everything we need to roast, carve and serve comes with us, and we pack away and leave the area as we found it.

A hog roast compared with other options

Next to a barbecue stall, a hog roast serves quickly from one roast. UK price guides vary widely: roughly £10 a head for a simple roll, rising past £20 with more included. Every event gets its own quote, with everything listed.

Why book with us

  • Staff to serve, so you don’t have to
  • Carved to order by a chef
  • Lamb, chicken and vegetarian options alongside
  • An itemised quote

DIY versus a catered hog roast

Full catering or machine hire? With catering, our chef roasts, carves and serves, and our staff clear up. With DIY hire, you do the work and save on staffing.

You could roast a hog yourself, but it is a long day’s work, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. With us catering, you get to be a host, not a cook.

About the food

Stuffing and apple sauce

Apple sauce brings sweetness and sharpness go with the pork perfectly. Stuffing normally contains gluten.

Roast pork

Our chef carves the pork as it’s needed, which keeps it hot and moist.

Roughly 46 miles from the centre of London, and we cover it as standard.

What’s the nearest station to Viables?

The closest is Basingstoke station, roughly 1.3 miles away.

Can you help with a fundraiser?

Let us know your plans, and we will suggest a way to make it work.

Can we just hire the roaster?

Yes, for confident cooks. We will explain the details with your quote.

What about coeliacs?

We can supply gluten-free rolls on request. We’ll give you full allergen information for every dish.

Do you cover Viables?

Yes. We cover London and the South East, Viables and the rest of Hampshire included. Tell us the venue and we will quote.

Where does the hog roast go?

A level, open area outdoors with room for the roaster, a gazebo and a carving table, away from buildings, marquee walls and overhanging trees. We’ll confirm the space with your quote.

Can the hog roast be cooked indoors?

Outside, always. The food can be carried in and served indoors where the venue allows.

The process

Carving is part of the show: the hog is carved in front of your visitors, and the crackling is shared out so everyone gets some. In December, Viables is dark by about 4:00pm, so the pitch needs good lighting and a clear route for the queue.

  1. It starts with your event date, site and expected numbers.
  2. You get a check on the date and pitch, and a quote.
  3. We arrive early, set up on the pitch and start roasting.
  4. We serve to order through the event.
  5. We pack down, take our waste and leave the pitch clean.

Getting ready for the day

  • Check there is a route to wheel the equipment in, without steps
  • Plan somewhere sheltered for people to eat if it rains
  • Tell us about narrow gates or side passages

Planning for dietary needs

A little planning helps everyone eat safely. A few tips:

  • Share the event’s food safety requirements with us
  • Check other traders aren’t all selling pork
  • Gluten-free rolls can be brought on request
  • Halal is not offered

Give us a contact on the day.

Gluten-free rolls are available on request.

Planning the cooking spot

Most outdoor spaces can work if a few things are right. Here’s what helps:

  • Space away from marquees, stalls and trees
  • Flat, firm ground for the roaster
  • Your trader requirements

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise.
