A hog roast near Greatness

How our hog roast hire works in Greatness

In Greatness, a hog roast is an easy way to feed plenty of people: a single slow roast, carved to order. We bring the roaster, the cover and the serving kit, and we serve and tidy up afterwards. Typical bookings include work summer parties and community events, with new potatoes, hog roast rolls and halloumi skewers.

For a place the size of Greatness, your own garden is frequently the best venue: space to cook, no venue hire and no cooking for you. Tell us about access down the drive or side of the house. We bring the roaster, the cover and everything we need to cook and serve, and we pack away and leave the area as we found it.

Questions from Greatness

Which station is closest to Greatness?

Greatness has its own station: Bat & Ball station.

Can you cater after a service at St John the Baptist?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby with an outdoor spot for the roaster. Churches rarely have space for a hog roast, so the food is normally elsewhere. Send us the address.

What’s included?

Roast pork carved into soft rolls with sage and onion stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. Extras include lamb, chicken, halloumi skewers, a vegan option, salads and potatoes.

What space does the roaster need?

A flat, open spot outside, plus a step-free route to wheel the equipment in. Send us a picture if you’re unsure.

How far ahead should we book?

Popular dates go early. But it is always worth asking: fill in our quote form.

Do you cover Greatness?

We do. Send us the address and we will confirm availability.

How much will it be?

It depends on numbers, the menu and how long we’re on site. Tell us your date and we will send a price.

What do you need from us on the day?

Only the space and a contact number. We bring the roaster, cover and serving kit.

What happens on the day

Serving is straightforward: the chef carves and the team serves, and sides go out at the same time. When everyone has eaten, we clear up and leave the spot tidy. By late September, sunset in Greatness is around 7:05pm, and in December it is nearer 3:55pm. After dark, a lit path to the food makes a difference.

  1. We start with a few details about your event.
  2. We check the date and the cooking spot, then send a quote.
  3. Timings and the cooking area are agreed in advance.
  4. On the day we roast for hours, then carve to order.
  5. Our staff serve and clear, then we pack away.

Preparing for the day

  • Check there is a route to wheel the equipment in, without steps
  • Choose someone to meet us on arrival
  • Keep the spot clear of buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches

For planners, venues and organisers

If you are booking for a workplace, ask your facilities team about outside caterers and gas cooking. We work to the site’s rules.

Marquee hire companies often have rules about cooking near their tents, so let them know about the roaster. We’ll keep the roaster well clear of the marquee.

A hog roast compared with other options

Next to a buffet, a hog roast is hot, freshly carved and feels like an occasion. A buffet can sit out all afternoon. UK price guides vary widely: roughly £10 a head for a simple roll, rising past £20 with more included. We quote every event individually, so you know exactly what you are paying for.

Why us?

  • No surprises: everything in writing
  • Self-contained: roaster, cover and serving kit
  • Roasted on site, slowly, for hours
  • Lamb, chicken and vegetarian options alongside

DIY versus a catered hog roast

The hardest part of a DIY hog roast is timing: a big roast takes hours and must be cooked thoroughly. If that sounds stressful, choose the catered option.

Full catering or machine hire? With catering, our chef roasts, carves and serves, and our staff clear up. With hire only, you do the cooking yourself.

Space, access and the venue

Most outdoor spaces can work with a little planning. Here’s what we look for:

  • A marquee, hall or barn as a wet-weather plan
  • A step-free route to wheel the equipment in
  • A safe distance from walls, tents and trees

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise before you book.

What affects the price in Greatness

Here’s what affects the price:

  • The number of people
  • How easy it is to reach the spot
  • Crockery choices
  • Menu choices and extras

For larger numbers, a hog roast is generally good value, because one whole roast feeds plenty of people. The menu, extras such as china and the serving time all affect the final price.

Details that help

When you get in touch, please mention:

A hog roast in Greatness: local details

Greatness is about 1 mile north-east of Sevenoaks, in Kent. We set up the roaster at homes, halls, workplaces and venues in Greatness and the surrounding area. Greatness is one of 922 towns and villages in Kent we cover. You can also see our page for London, about 19 miles away.

A green space like Montreal Park is tempting, but a gas-fired roaster there needs the landowner’s say-so, generally the council’s. Within reach of Greatness are historic houses such as Knole House (1.7 miles south) and Ightham Mote (3.7 miles south-east). Estates like these tend to have strict rules for caterers, so check before you book. Greatness is within about 4 miles of the Kent Downs National Landscape, and some venues there have rules about cooking and vehicles on site. Ask your venue about gas cooking and access.

This part of Kent takes in TN13, TN14 and TN15, and we can cater your event anywhere in it. Your event could be at a house on Seal Road, Mill Lane and Sandy Lane or the roads around them, as long as there is somewhere outside to cook. Close by, we cover events in Seal (1 mile east), Godden Green (2 miles south-east), Styants Bottom (3 miles east), Bitchet Green (3 miles south-east) and Stone Street (3 miles south-east). We also serve nearby towns such as Maidstone (14 miles east), Dartford (11 miles north), Royal Tunbridge Wells (11 miles south), Gravesend (12 miles north-east), Tonbridge (7 miles south-east) and Northfleet (12 miles north-east).

Well-known places in the area include Sevenoaks Museum (1.3 miles south) and Kemsing Castle Bank (1.7 miles north-east). Green spaces nearby include Dryhill Nature Reserve.

What we serve, dish by dish

Rolls and gluten-free rolls

We can serve in rolls or on plates, with gluten-free rolls on request.

Vegan burger or sausage (Ve)

Vegan guests can have a vegan burger or sausage, so nobody misses out.

Allergies and dietary needs

Rolls and stuffing normally contain gluten, so ask for gluten-free rolls if you need them. A few more tips:

  • Count anyone who doesn’t eat pork, so we can bring lamb, chicken or vegetarian options
  • Give us numbers for vegetarians and vegans for the halloumi skewers and vegan option
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if anyone needs them
  • Tell guests what’s on the menu in advance

Name someone to meet us, ideally not the host, so you can enjoy yourself.

Sides turn a roll into a proper meal.

  • Slow-roasted on site for hours, outdoors at your event
  • Carved to order by our chef, with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Vegetarian and vegan choices, plus lamb or chicken if you like
  • Served when you’re ready, and we tidy the serving area afterwards
