What a hog roast costs

We don’t use a fixed price list, because every event is different. What matters most:

  • How long the roast and service take
  • Whether you want china
  • Site access
  • Travel to Longlands

Most of the cost is the meat, the staff and the time on site. Slow roasting means we are on site for much of the day, which is built into the price.

What to tell us

When you enquire, it helps to include:

  • Your date and serving time
  • The address or postcode
  • Rules from the venue or landowner
  • Rough numbers

A quote from us sets out the menu, timings, staffing and what’s included, so it is easy to compare like for like. Fill in our quote form.

Bringing a hog roast to Longlands

Longlands is about 1 mile west of Sidcup, in Greater London. From village halls to gardens and fields, events around Longlands suit a hog roast. We cover all 764 towns and villages across Greater London. Our bookings stretch from Longlands to London (9 miles away).

Coming by train? New Eltham station is about 0.8 miles away. A green space like Waring Park is tempting, but a gas-fired roaster there needs the landowner’s say-so, normally the council’s. The Kent Downs National Landscape is within about 8 miles of Longlands. Ask your venue about gas cooking and access.

For events in DA15, DA14 and SE9, we just need to know where the roaster can cook and a serving time. We can cater an event on streets such as Main Road, Alder Road and Sidcup Road or the roads around them, wherever there’s an outdoor spot for the roaster. Main roads around Longlands include the A211, so getting the roaster to your event is simple. Neighbouring places where we cater events include Foxbury (1 mile south), New Eltham (1 mile north-west), Chislehurst (1 mile south-west), Coldharbour (1 mile west) and Blackfen (1 mile north). Full catering or machine hire?

Buying in a cold buffet is another option, but hot, freshly carved roast pork is a different experience.

We also hire out the hog roast machine for confident cooks. You cook and carve it yourself; we’ll explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

How the day works

Rain does not stop the roast, because we cook under cover. Your guests will still want somewhere dry to eat, such as a marquee, hall or barn. In Longlands, the sun sets at about 9:20pm in late June and about 7:05pm in late September, so summer evening service is typically in daylight. In December it is dark by about 3:55pm, so the cooking and serving area needs lighting.

  1. You share the when, where and how many.
  2. We look at the cooking area and send a price.
  3. We arrive early, set up under cover and start roasting.
  4. Our chef carves and our staff serve.
  5. We pack away and leave you to it.

How to prepare

  • Gather dietary requirements early
  • Choose someone to meet us on arrival
  • Ensure we can wheel the roaster to the spot

Working with your venue

Longlands questions

We are gathering after a service at Christ Church: can you cater?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby with an outdoor spot for the roaster. Churches rarely have space for a hog roast, so the food is usually elsewhere. Send us the address.

Can you do a hog roast in Waring Park?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, typically the council, and many parks don’t allow cooking. Ask them first, and tell us what they say.

Do you do DIY hog roast hire?

Yes, we hire out the hog roast machine. We’ll confirm what comes with it and how to use it.

How do we prepare?

The agreed cooking area, access for our equipment and someone to meet us. We’ll bring the rest.

Can you be flexible on serving time?

Because the roast takes hours, we plan from your serving time, and a cooked roast can be held for a while if things run late.

What if it rains?

The roaster is under cover, so a shower does not stop us. Your guests will want somewhere dry to eat.

Can we have lamb or chicken?

Pork is the classic, and you can add spit-roast lamb or rotisserie chicken. There are vegetarian and vegan options as well.

When should we book?

Summer Saturdays and December book up first. Quieter dates can often be booked at shorter notice. Ask and we’ll check.

Planning the cooking spot

The roaster needs the right spot, because it cooks outside for several hours, so a few things are worth checking:

  • The venue’s agreement to a gas-fired roaster
  • A way to wheel the roaster to the spot
  • Vehicle access close to the cooking area

Longlands is in London, within the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and access can be tight: tell us about side or rear access, steps and parking for our vehicle.

If you are unsure, send a photo of the space and the way in, and we’ll say what we think before you book.

How to compare hog roast caterers

Looking after everyone

We give full allergen information for every dish. To make the most of it:

  • Tell guests what’s on the menu in advance
  • Count anyone who does not eat pork, and order an alternative for them
  • Stuffing normally contains gluten, so check the allergen information
  • We don’t offer halal meat, so arrange that separately if it is needed

We bring the cover, the carving table and the serving kit, so you only need to provide the space.

Prefer to cook yourself? Ask about DIY machine hire.

  • Roasted on site for several hours, outdoors under cover
  • Freshly carved pork with crackling, stuffing and apple sauce
  • Options beyond pork, including lamb, chicken and vegetarian dishes
  • Served when you’re ready, and we tidy the serving area afterwards
