Questions from Sheet Hill

Could you cook in Ivy Hatch Nature Reserve?

Only if the landowner, usually the council, allows it. Check with them first.

Do you come out to small places like Sheet Hill?

No, we come to small places too. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

Is hog roast hire catered or DIY?

Either: fully catered, where we roast, carve and serve, or DIY machine hire. Catering is the most popular choice.

How soon do you get booked up?

Popular dates go early. But do ask even at short notice: fill in our quote form.

Do you cover the whole of Kent?

Kent is part of our area, including Sheet Hill. Ask for a quote.

What do you need from us on the day?

The agreed cooking area, access for our equipment and someone to meet us. We bring everything else.

How long does a hog roast take to cook?

Hours rather than minutes. You will know our arrival time in advance.

Do we need our own staff?

No need for your own staff: we carve, serve and tidy up.

Hog roast hire in Sheet Hill, carved to order

How we price a hog roast

A few things make the biggest difference to the price:

  • Which meats and sides you choose
  • Season and day of the week
  • How many people are eating
  • Crockery choices

Midweek and quieter months are frequently easier to book, and the menu you choose matters too. Tell us your budget and we will suggest what works.

What to tell us

For a quick, accurate price, tell us:

  • Rough numbers
  • Allergies we should know about
  • Where the roaster could go, ideally with a photo
  • The venue or postcode

Tell us your date, venue or postcode and roughly how many people, along with your serving time. We’ll check the date and send a quote. Send us your details through our quote form.

For planners, venues and organisers

Organisers may ask for documents such as a risk assessment or gas safety information. Let us know what your event requires and we’ll confirm what we can provide.

If you’re a venue or event planner, we can fit around your other suppliers, sharing timings and a site plan.

Looking after everyone

Not everyone eats pork, so it’s worth adding an alternative. A few pointers:

  • If anyone needs halal food, plan a separate option
  • Remember that stuffing generally contains gluten, so ask for the allergen list
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if anyone needs them
  • Put the menu on the invitation

We will agree a contact for the day, who can show us the cooking spot and pass on any changes.

Prefer to cook yourself? Ask about DIY machine hire.

The menu, dish by dish

Halloumi and vegetable skewers (V)

Our vegetarian option is halloumi and vegetable skewers: grilled halloumi with vegetables, in a roll or on a plate.

Vegan burger or sausage (Ve)

For vegans, there is a vegan burger or sausage in a roll, so everyone has something hot.

Should I cook it myself?

You could go for a cold buffet, but nothing beats hot pork and crackling carved in front of you.

You could roast a hog yourself, but it is a long day’s work, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. With us catering, you get to be a host, not a cook.

The process

Carving is part of the show: our chef carves the pork in front of the queue, and the crackling is shared out so everyone gets some. Late September evenings in Sheet Hill lose the light at about 7:00pm, and in December it is nearer 3:55pm. After dark, a lit path to the food makes a difference.

  1. First, you send us your date, address, numbers and serving time.
  2. You get a check on the date and the spot, and a quote.
  3. We arrive well ahead, put the cover up and get the hog roasting.
  4. Our chef carves to order and our staff serve at the agreed time.
  5. We clear the serving area and pack away.

Getting ready for the day

  • Have a covered area for eating in case of rain
  • Measure the narrowest gate or passage
  • Plan a step-free way in for the equipment

A green space like Ivy Hatch Nature Reserve is tempting, but a gas-fired roaster there needs the landowner’s say-so, typically the council’s. If you’re gathering after a service at a church like Plaxtol Church, a nearby hall or garden suits a hog roast. Sheet Hill is within about 7 miles of the Kent Downs National Landscape. Ask your venue about gas cooking and access.

Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

Compared with a cold buffet, hot roast pork carved in front of you is a different experience. A buffet can sit out all afternoon. Compare like for like: menu, sides, serving time, staff, plates and travel. The cheapest quote isn’t always the best value.

Why us?

  • Roasted on site, slowly, for hours
  • No surprises: everything in writing
  • Rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • All the equipment comes with us

See how we price and the cost guide.

Space, access and the venue

The roaster needs space, cover and a safe distance from anything that could catch the heat. Before booking, check:

  • Access for our equipment, without steps
  • Flat outdoor ground for the roaster and a gazebo
  • Space away from buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches

If you’re unsure, send a photo of the space and the way in, and we’ll say what we think.
