What we serve, dish by dish

Spit-roast lamb cooks slowly like the hog, carved to order at the serving station.

Crunchy coleslaw suits roast pork, while salads and potatoes make a plated meal.
Hog roast hire for your event in Upton Grey
Our hog roast hire is fully catered: we roast, our chef carves and our staff serve. For confident cooks, the machine can be hired on its own. We serve spit-roast lamb, halloumi skewers and new potatoes, and we are regularly asked to cater christmas parties and wedding breakfasts and evening food.
In a hamlet or village like Upton Grey, a farmyard or a neighbour’s field can make a good cooking spot. Mention gates and soft ground when you get in touch. Plates come as standard, with china available if you’d like it, at an extra cost.
For planners, venues and organisers
Many venues set rules for outside caterers, from approved lists to where a gas roaster can go. Check early, and pass on anything they need from us.
Some venues charge a fee if you bring in your own caterer, so it is worth asking first. We’ll work with the venue on access and the cooking spot.
Is a hog roast right for your event?
Compared with a plated meal, a hog roast needs no kitchen and fewer staff, which typically keeps the cost down. A hog roast is often good value for a crowd, since one roast goes a long way. The menu, extras such as china and the serving time all affect the final price.

How we price a hog roast
We work out each quote from:
- The serving time and how long we are on site
- The date and time of year
- Travel to Upton Grey
- The number of people
Most of the cost is the meat, the staff and the time on site. A long, slow roast means an early start, which is built into the price.

What the cooking area needs
Most gardens, car parks, yards and fields work if a few things are right. Here’s what we look for:
- The venue’s agreement to a gas-fired roaster
- Cover for your guests in bad weather
- A safe distance from walls, tents and trees

Your questions about a hog roast in Upton Grey
Do you come out to small places like Upton Grey?
Not at all. We cater in villages and hamlets as well as towns. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.
Can you cater after a service at Church of St Mary?
Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with room to cook outside. Churches rarely have space for a hog roast, so the food is usually elsewhere. Send us the address.
Is hog roast hire catered or DIY?
You can have us cook, or hire the machine. Your quote will set out what’s included.
How soon do you get booked up?
Summer Saturdays and December book up first. For other dates, a few weeks can be enough. Ask and we will check.
Do we need our own staff?
We carve and serve for you, and we clear up when service is finished.
Is crockery included?
We supply plates as standard. China is available at an extra cost.
Can we just hire the roaster?
Yes, for confident cooks. We’ll explain the details with your quote.
How big a hog will we need?
Quantities are based on your numbers, and we will talk it through when we quote.
How it works
The roaster cooks outdoors, under a gazebo on level ground, well clear of walls, tents and trees. We agree exactly where before the day. Late September evenings in Upton Grey lose the light at about 7:10pm, and at Christmas it comes at about 4:00pm. For anything after that, plan lights for the serving area.
- First, tell us about your event.
- You get an availability check and a clear quote.
- Timings and the cooking area are agreed in advance.
- On the day we roast for hours, then carve to order.
- Our staff serve and clear, then we pack away.
Preparing for the day
- Have a level outdoor spot ready
- Plan somewhere sheltered for people to eat if it rains
- Tell us about narrow gates or side passages

Catered or do it yourself?
The hardest part of a DIY hog roast is timing: a whole hog takes hours, and it needs to be cooked through safely. If that sounds stressful, choose the catered option.
DIY hire works best when someone in the family loves cooking. For bigger or more formal events, catering takes the pressure off.
Looking after everyone
Not everyone eats pork, so it is worth adding an alternative. A few pointers:
- Remember that stuffing normally contains gluten, so check the allergen information
- Label the vegetarian and vegan food clearly
- Ask about allergies when you send invitations
- Request gluten-free rolls for coeliac guests
Name someone to meet us, who can show us the cooking spot and pass on any changes.
China crockery is available on request, quoted separately.
