How it works

Slow roasting is the whole point: the meat cooks gently until it’s tender while the skin turns into crackling. Then it rests briefly before our chef carves. Around midsummer it stays light in Waterloo until about 9:20pm; by late September sunset is nearer 7:05pm, so a summer evening hog roast is normally carved in daylight. In December it’s dark by about 3:55pm, so the cooking and serving area needs lighting.

  1. First, tell us about your event.
  2. You get an availability check and a clear quote.
  3. We agree timings and where the roaster goes.
  4. On the day we roast for hours, then carve to order.
  5. Our staff serve and clear, then we pack away.

Before we arrive

  • Plan a step-free way in for the equipment
  • Pick a flat, open area outside for cooking
  • Gather dietary requirements early

Allergies and dietary needs

With a bit of planning, dietary needs are easier to handle. Here are a few tips:

  • Collect allergies with your RSVPs
  • Ask us to keep the vegetarian food separate and labelled
  • Tell guests what’s on the menu in advance
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if anyone needs them

Slow roasting needs attention, and that’s what we are there for. You can relax and enjoy the day.

Add lamb or chicken for a second roast, priced in the quote.

Is a hog roast right for your event?

Compared with a plated meal, a hog roast does not need a kitchen, which generally keeps the cost down. The price depends on numbers, the menu and how long we serve, plus travel and access. There is no one-size price, so we quote each one individually.

Why book our hog roast in Waterloo

What the cooking area needs

A good cooking spot makes the day run smoothly. Look for:

  • Cover for your guests in bad weather
  • Any venue rules sorted in advance
  • Vehicle access close to the cooking area

As a London location, Waterloo is inside the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and access takes planning: let us know how we reach the cooking spot and where we can park.

If you are unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we’ll say what we think.

DIY versus a catered hog roast

Roasting a whole hog yourself is possible, but it takes hours of attention, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. With us catering, you get to be a host, not a cook.

Catered or DIY? Catered means we do everything: roasting, carving, serving and clearing. With hire only, you do the cooking yourself.

Waterloo: venues, access and local tips

Waterloo is about 1 mile west of London, in Greater London. We cover Waterloo and its neighbours for events. Waterloo is one of 764 towns and villages in Greater London we cover.

PTAs at schools such as Oasis Academy Johanna frequently look for a hot-food stall for fairs and sports days. For a christening or gathering after a service at a church such as Christ Church, the roaster can be set up at a hall or home nearby.

For events in SE1, SE11 and WC2N, we just need to know where the roaster can cook and a serving time. From York Road, Spur Road and Bear Lane or anywhere nearby, we’ll bring the roaster to you. With the A301 and A302 close by, Waterloo is simple for us to get to with the roaster. Close by, we cover events in South Bank (1 mile north-west), Bankside (1 mile north-east), Adelphi (1 mile north-west), Temple (1 mile north) and Charing Cross (1 mile north-west). Further out, we also cater in Kensington (4 miles west), Walthamstow (7 miles north-east), Hoxton (3 miles north-east), Hampstead (5 miles north-west), Ruislip (14 miles west) and Orpington (12 miles south-east).

Planners, venues and businesses

Many venues set rules for outside caterers, including where gas cooking is allowed. Ask early, and pass on anything they need from us.

Event organisers often ask caterers for paperwork such as a risk assessment. Tell us what you need and we will tell you what we can send.

Common questions in Waterloo

Could you cook in Jubilee Gardens?

Only if the landowner, normally the council, allows it. Ask them first, and tell us what they say.

Can you get a hog roast into a London garden in Waterloo?

Frequently, if there is a rear gate, a front garden or a yard we can use. Send us a picture and we will tell you honestly.

Will people get crackling?

Yes, the crackling is shared out as we carve.

When do you start roasting?

Several hours, depending on the size and the weather, so we arrive well before you want to eat. We work back from your serving time.

How much will it be?

Every booking is quoted individually, depending on numbers, menu, timings and travel. Tell us about your event for a quote.

Can you cater for vegetarians?

The menu has lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options. Halal meat is not something we offer.

What meats can we have?

It is built around the hog, but lamb and chicken can be added.

What do you need from us on the day?

Just the agreed spot and a contact on the day. Everything for roasting and serving comes with us.

  • Roasted on site for several hours, outdoors under cover
  • Freshly carved pork with crackling, stuffing and apple sauce
  • Vegetarian and vegan choices, plus lamb or chicken if you like
  • Our team serves at your chosen time and clears up afterwards
