Slow-roasted pork in Blackfen

Party hog roast in Blackfen, slow-roasted on site

For a relaxed party, you can hire the machine and cook it yourself. Most people choose the catered option, and spend time with their guests. We are often asked to cater christenings and naming days and big birthday parties, serving apple sauce, coleslaw and crackling.

Most parties in Blackfen are at home, and in London that means getting the roaster into the garden. With no side passage, a rear gate or front garden may work. Send us a photo. We bring the roaster, the cover and everything we need to cook and serve, and we leave the spot tidy when we go.

The process

Carving is part of the show: our chef carves the pork in front of the queue, and the crackling is shared out so everyone gets some. At midsummer, it is light in Blackfen until about 9:20pm, so a garden party can run well into the evening. In late September it is dark by about 7:05pm; add lights for the evening.

  1. You tell us the date, your address, rough numbers and when you’d like to eat.
  2. We check the space and send a clear quote.
  3. On the day we arrive hours ahead and start the roast under cover.
  4. Our chef carves and our staff serve when you’re ready.
  5. We pack away and leave the garden tidy.

Preparing for the day

  • Keep the spot clear of buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches
  • Name a contact for the day
  • Think about shelter for your guests

How to get a price

Hosting a hog roast party in Blackfen

Blackfen is about 2 miles east of Eltham, in Greater London. We cater parties across Blackfen and nearby. Blackfen is one of 764 towns and villages in Greater London where we cater. You can also see our page for London, about 9 miles away.

Within reach of Blackfen are historic houses such as Danson House (1.2 miles east) and Red House (1.7 miles east). For most parties, a garden or hall is easier than a historic venue with strict catering rules. For guests coming by train, Falconwood station, about 0.8 miles north-west, is the nearest station.

Here we cover the DA15, DA16 and SE9 postcode area, so your party can be anywhere in it. Catered or do it yourself?

DIY hire works best when someone in the family loves cooking. For bigger or more formal events, catering takes the pressure off.

If you’re confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You cook and carve it yourself; we will confirm what comes with it when you ask.

Planning the cooking spot

Most gardens, car parks, yards and fields work with a little planning. Here’s what we look for:

  • A level patio, lawn or driveway
  • Access for the roaster through a gate or passage
  • Space away from the house, fences, sheds and trees

Blackfen is in London, within the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and access can be tight: tell us about side or rear access, steps and parking for our vehicle.

If you are unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we’ll say what we think.

What a hog roast costs

The biggest factors are:

  • The serving time and how long we’re on site
  • Distance from us
  • Plates or china
  • Numbers

Extras such as lamb, chicken, more sides or china crockery add to the cost, so each one is itemised. Keeping it simple keeps it affordable.

What to tell us

Good details mean a good quote. Please include:

  • The date and when you’d like to eat
  • Where the roaster could go, ideally with a picture
  • Roughly how many people
  • Where the event is

Send us the date, the address or DA15 postcode and rough numbers, along with your serving time. We’ll check the date and send a quote. Use our quote form.

Diets, allergies and alternatives

A hog roast is pork, so plan for anyone who doesn’t eat it. Here’s how to cover everyone:

  • Count non-pork eaters for the alternatives
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if anyone needs them
  • Give us numbers for vegetarians and vegans
  • Plan separately for anyone who needs halal food

Ensure the gate or side passage is open when we arrive, so we can wheel the equipment in.

Rotisserie chicken is popular at family parties.

Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

Instead of booking a restaurant, you keep the party at home, with room for everyone. Weekday and off-season dates can be easier to book, and the menu you choose matters too. Ask us and we will suggest the best fit for your budget.

Common questions in Blackfen

Can you cater after a service at Church of the Good Shepherd?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby with an outdoor spot for the roaster. Churches rarely have space for a hog roast, so the food is normally elsewhere. Send us the address.

What if our house in Blackfen has no side access?

It depends on access: a rear gate or yard normally works. Tell us about steps, gates and parking and we’ll advise.

What comes with the hog roast?

The classic: pork in rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. Your quote lists any sides and extras.

Is a hog roast good for a children’s party?

Yes, and tell us how many children are coming, so we get the amounts right.

Is our garden suitable?

Most gardens can work, and a way to wheel the equipment through. A picture helps.

Can you roast in the rain?

We cook under a gazebo, so rain is not a problem for the roast. Somewhere covered for people to eat helps.

What’s the price?

Numbers, menu and travel decide the price. Tell us your date and we’ll send a price.

Do you bring a gazebo?

Not for the cooking, but a gazebo or indoor space for guests is a good backup.

What we serve, dish by dish

Halloumi and vegetable skewers (V)

Rotisserie chicken is there for anyone who’d rather not have pork, and it suits fussy eaters.

  • Roasted slowly at your venue, outdoors and under cover
  • Carved by our chef into rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
