How our party hog roast works in West Hill

A party at home needs a little planning for the roaster: a level spot away from the house and trees, under cover. We will check it with you. We serve rotisserie chicken, apple sauce and a vegan burger or sausage, and we’re regularly asked to cater christenings and 18th, 21st, 40th, 50th and 60th birthdays.

For a party in West Hill, home is often the best venue. Let us know how we reach the garden, and we will bring everything else. You will know what’s included before booking: serving times, the menu, staff and anything else agreed, with no surprises on the day.

A hog roast compared with other options

DIY or catered? DIY hire works for relaxed get-togethers; catering suits bigger parties. When comparing prices, compare the same things: the menu, sides, service time, staffing, crockery and travel. A cheaper headline price can leave things out.

Why West Hill hosts choose us

  • Carved by our chef in front of your guests
  • Sides to make it a full meal
  • Serving and clearing done for you
  • We bring everything to cook and serve

Read our prices page or the cost guide.

What happens on the day

When we arrive, we position the roaster under cover and get the hog cooking. It then roasts slowly for several hours, timed so it is ready when you want to eat. At midsummer, it’s light in West Hill until about 9:15pm, which gives a garden party a long evening. By late September sunset is around 7:05pm, so plan festoon lights for later parties.

  1. Start with the date, the address and roughly how many.
  2. We check the space and send a price.
  3. We arrive early and get the roast going.
  4. We carve and serve at food time.
  5. We tidy up and pack away.

Getting ready for the day

  • Choose someone to meet us on arrival
  • Check there’s nothing overhead or close by that could catch the heat
  • Check there is a route to wheel the equipment in, without steps

Should I cook it myself?

You could go for a cold buffet, but nothing beats hot pork and crackling carved in front of you.

The hardest part of a DIY hog roast is timing: a whole hog takes hours, and it needs to be cooked through safely. If you’d rather not worry about it, let us cook.

Rotisserie chicken

Chicken off the rotisserie, carved or jointed goes into rolls or onto plates.

Stuffing and apple sauce

No hog roast roll is complete without sage and onion stuffing and apple sauce, cutting through the richness of the pork.

Prices and what affects them

Every booking is priced individually, and the price depends on a few things:

  • Time on site
  • The journey to the venue
  • Numbers
  • How easy it is to reach the spot

Distance is part of the price: travel is included in your quote. Give us the address so the quote is accurate.

Details that help

Good details mean a good quote. Please include:

  • An estimate of numbers
  • Anything the venue has asked for
  • The date and when you’d like to eat
  • A photo of the cooking area

For a quote, send us a few details: your date, your venue or postcode, how many people and any menu choices. Send us your details through our quote form.

How to compare hog roast caterers

West Hill: your questions answered

Can you cater after a service at Galeed Strict Baptist Chapel?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with room to cook outside. Churches rarely have space for a hog roast, so the food is normally elsewhere. Tell us where you’ll gather.

Could you cook in St. Ann's Well Gardens?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, typically the council, and many parks don’t allow cooking. Check with them first.

Do you cover West Hill?

Yes. We cater across London and the South East, including West Hill and Brighton and Hove. Send us the address for a quote.

Is clearing up included?

Plates come as standard and our staff clear the serving area.

Do you do DIY hog roast hire?

DIY machine hire is available. We will explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

Do we need to provide electricity?

Cooking is gas-fired, so no mains power is needed for the roast. A socket nearby is useful for lighting.

What’s included?

Rolls with roast pork, stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. You can add lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options, salads, coleslaw and potatoes.

How far ahead should we book?

Popular dates go early. But do ask even at short notice: fill in our quote form.

Working with your venue

Booking for a club or group? A single point of contact keeps things simple, especially on the day.

Some venues charge a fee if you bring in your own caterer, so check before booking. We will liaise with them on access and set-up.

Before you choose a spot

Before the day, it helps to think about where the roaster will go. We look for:

  • A step-free way into the garden
  • Clearance from walls, fences and overhanging branches
  • A level spot in the garden, on the patio or drive

If you’re unsure, send a photo of the space and the way in, and we’ll say what we think.
