Choosing a hog roast caterer

Preston: your questions answered

Can you do a hog roast at a venue in the South Downs National Park?

Yes. Some venues there have rules about cooking and vehicles, so check with yours. We’ll work to whatever the site needs.

What about windy coastal sites?

Yes, of course. Wind is something we plan for: a sheltered spot and secure cover.

Where will the roaster go at our wedding?

Outside, under its own cover, a safe distance from the marquee. We can serve inside the marquee if the supplier agrees.

Do you leave the area tidy?

Our staff clear up after service, and leave the area tidy.

Can the hog roast be for the evening?

Yes. We’ll agree a serving time around your running order.

Will guests be full?

Quantities are based on your guest list, and we’ll confirm it in writing.

Can we have a hog roast as the main meal?

Of course: carved pork on plates with sides, with our staff serving.

Can we hire the machine and cook it ourselves?

DIY machine hire is available. We will confirm what comes with it and how to use it.

Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

A common mix is a plated meal followed by an evening hog roast; others make the hog roast the main meal. Weekday and off-season dates can be easier to book, and the menu you choose makes a difference too. Ask us and we will suggest the best fit for your budget.

What you get with us

What a hog roast costs

We work out each quote from:

  • The menu and extras such as lamb or chicken
  • The serving time and how long we are on site
  • Site access
  • Travel to Preston

Details that help

The more we know, the more accurate the quote. Please include:

  • Your menu choices
  • A picture of the cooking area
  • The date and when you’d like to eat
  • Roughly how many people

It’s easy to get a price: date, place, numbers and serving time. We’ll reply with a clear price and what’s included. Fill in our quote form.

Planning the cooking spot

A good cooking spot makes the day run smoothly. Look for:

  • Light near the carving station after dark
  • The venue’s agreement to a gas-fired roaster
  • A way in for the roaster

If you are unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think.

What we serve

  • Crackling
  • New potatoes

What comes off the roaster

Rolls and gluten-free rolls

Everything goes into a soft roll, perfect for eating on the move. Gluten-free rolls are available on request.

Crackling

Long, slow roasting turns the skin into crackling, and we break it up so everyone gets a piece.

Step by step

Rain does not stop the roast, because we cook under cover. It is worth planning a sheltered place for people to eat, too. In Preston, midsummer sunset is about 9:20pm, and by late September it is nearer 7:05pm, so evening food is often carved in daylight in June and July. For autumn and winter weddings, when it is dark by about 3:55pm in December, plan lighting at the carving station.

  1. We start with your date, venue, numbers and running order.
  2. We check the venue’s rules and the date, then send a quote.
  3. We fit our timings around your running order and the venue.
  4. We cook through the day and serve right on cue.
  5. Afterwards we tidy our area and leave you to the party.

Getting ready for the day

  • Keep the spot clear of buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches
  • Plan a step-free way in for the equipment
  • Collect dietary needs and allergies in advance

Catered or do it yourself?

You could roast a hog yourself, but it is a long day’s work, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. With us catering, you get to be a host, not a cook.

DIY hire works best when someone in the family loves cooking. For bigger or more formal events, catering takes the pressure off.

Working with your venue

If you are planning an event on someone’s behalf, such as a wedding planner, an office manager or a fête committee, let us know who we’ll deal with on the day. We will keep you both updated.

Venues often have rules for outside caterers, including where gas cooking is allowed. Check early, and pass on anything they need from us.

  • Roasted on site for several hours, outdoors under cover
  • Our chef carves the pork, with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling on the side
  • Vegetarian and vegan choices, plus lamb or chicken if you like
  • Served when you’re ready, and we tidy the serving area afterwards
