Wedding hog roast in Rackham, slow-roasted on site

As a main meal, the hog roast is served on plates: roast pork, crackling and a choice of sides, on china if you’d like. For the day after the wedding and the main wedding meal, we can cook salads, spit-roast lamb and new potatoes and more.

There’s something special about a country wedding near Rackham, and a whole hog roasting through the afternoon adds to it. Plan a firm route in, especially if it rains. We plan the timings around your day, because the roast has to start hours before you eat.

Planning for dietary needs

Rolls and stuffing typically contain gluten, and gluten-free rolls are available on request. A few more tips:

  • Halal isn’t offered, so plan separately if needed
  • Ask about dietary needs on your RSVP card
  • Give your coordinator the final menu
  • Note which guests do not eat pork, so we can add lamb, chicken or vegetarian options

We’re on site for much of the day, out of the way, by the cooking area.

China crockery can be added for the wedding breakfast, as an extra.

Organising for someone else?

Some venues add a fee for outside caterers, so check before booking. We will liaise with them on access and set-up.

If you are a venue or event planner, we can fit around your other suppliers, sharing timings and a site plan.

What a hog roast costs

The price comes down to:

  • The menu and extras such as lamb or chicken
  • Time on site
  • Numbers
  • Crockery choices

Extras such as lamb, chicken, more sides or china crockery add to the cost, so each one is itemised. A simple menu keeps the cost down.

Details that help

What we serve, dish by dish

Spit-roast lamb

Adding lamb gives people a choice of two roasts, which suits bigger events.

Rotisserie chicken

For guests who do not eat pork, rotisserie chicken is the easy answer, and it suits fussy eaters.

Space, access and the venue

The roaster needs the right spot, because it cooks outside for several hours, and a little planning goes a long way:

  • Flat ground outside the reception for the roaster
  • A way in for the roaster
  • Space well clear of tents and trees

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise before booking.

From the roaster

  • Salads
  • Spit-roast lamb
  • Rotisserie chicken
  • Vegan option (Ve)
  • Halloumi skewers (V)
  • New potatoes
  • Stuffing and apple sauce
  • Hog roast rolls
  • Crackling
  • Roast or jacket potatoes

Choosing a hog roast caterer

Rackham: your questions answered

Can you do a hog roast at a venue in the South Downs National Park?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for caterers; ask your venue. We will work to whatever the site needs.

Can you do a hog roast in Parham Park?

Only if the landowner, generally the council, allows it. Ask them first, and tell us what they say.

Is a hog roast enough for a wedding?

Quantities are based on your guest list, and the quote lists everything.

Can you roast in the rain?

The roaster is under cover, so a shower does not stop us. Plan somewhere sheltered for eating.

Can you work around our timings?

Because the roast takes hours, we plan from your serving time, and a cooked roast can be held for a while if things run late.

What do you need from us on the day?

Only the space and a contact number. Everything for roasting and serving comes with us.

Where does the hog roast go?

Enough level ground outdoors for the roaster and a serving table under cover, plus a step-free route to wheel the equipment in. A picture helps.

What’s the price?

It depends on numbers, the menu and how long we’re on site. Tell us your date and we’ll send a price.

How it works

On the day, we position the roaster under cover and get the hog cooking. It then roasts slowly for several hours, timed so it’s ready when you want to eat. In Rackham, evening wedding food frequently coincides with dusk: about 9:20pm at midsummer, 8:50pm in late May and 7:05pm in late September. Festoon lights by the carving station look lovely in the photos.

  1. Share your date, venue, numbers and which meal you’d like.
  2. We check the venue and the cooking spot and send a price.
  3. We fit our timings around your running order and the venue.
  4. The hog roasts through the afternoon, and our chef carves on cue.
  5. Afterwards we tidy our area and leave you to the party.

Before we arrive

  • Name a contact for the day
  • Check there’s nothing overhead or close by that could catch the heat
  • Gather dietary requirements early

Planning help

Catered or do it yourself?

You could go for a cold buffet, but nothing beats hot pork and crackling carved in front of you.

Some hosts try a barbecue instead, but someone has to stand at the grill all day. With a hog roast, one roast feeds everyone at once.

  • Roasted on site for several hours, outdoors under cover
  • Freshly carved pork with crackling, stuffing and apple sauce
  • Vegetarian and vegan choices, plus lamb or chicken if you like
  • Served when you’re ready, and we tidy the serving area afterwards
