How our wedding hog roast works in The Sands

A hog roast is made for marquee, barn and garden weddings near The Sands. We cook outside, under cover, and serve inside where the venue allows. On the menu are carved roast pork, halloumi skewers and new potatoes, and we are often booked for wedding breakfasts with sides and small, informal weddings.

What a hog roast costs

Your quote depends on:

  • Plates or china
  • Access to the cooking area
  • Distance from us
  • The menu and extras such as lamb or chicken

Published UK guides give a wide range for hog roast catering, from around £10 a head for a basic roll to £20 or more with sides and service. We quote every event individually, so you know exactly what you are paying for.

Getting an accurate quote

We can quote more accurately with a few details. Here’s what to include:

  • Where the roaster could go, ideally with a photo
  • Your menu choices
  • Rules from the venue or landowner
  • Roughly how many people

We need a few details to quote: the date and serving time, the venue or GU10 postcode, rough numbers and which extras you’d like. Use our quote form.

For planners, venues and organisers

For venues and planners, we can fit around your other suppliers.

If you’re booking for a workplace, check with facilities about gas equipment and vehicle access. We’ll fit in with site rules.

Step by step

The roaster is gas-fired, so cooking does not depend on mains power; a nearby socket helps with lights if service runs into the evening. In The Sands, evening wedding food frequently coincides with dusk: about 9:20pm at midsummer, 8:55pm in late May and 7:05pm in late September. Festoon lights by the carving station look lovely in the photos.

  1. Share your date, venue, numbers and which meal you’d like.
  2. You get a check on the date and venue, and a quote.
  3. Timings and the cooking spot are agreed with you and the venue coordinator.
  4. We roast during the ceremony and drinks, then carve at the agreed time.
  5. Our staff clear the serving area and we leave quietly.

How to prepare

  • Keep the spot clear of buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches
  • Tell us about narrow gates or side passages
  • Collect dietary needs and allergies in advance

Questions from The Sands

We’re gathering after a service at The Church of the Good Shepherd: can you cater?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with room to cook outside. Food is normally served at the reception venue rather than the church. Tell us where you’ll gather.

Could you cook in Crooksbury Hill?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, generally the council, and many parks do not allow cooking. Check with them first.

Can you do our evening wedding food?

Yes, evening food is very popular. Hot pork rolls are perfect late in the evening.

How much room do you need?

Enough level ground outdoors for the roaster and a serving table under cover, plus a step-free route to wheel the equipment in. Send us a photo if you are unsure.

What should we sort out beforehand?

The agreed cooking area, access for our equipment and someone to meet us. We bring everything else.

Can a hog roast be our wedding breakfast?

Many couples do exactly that, with lamb, chicken and vegetarian options alongside.

How far ahead should we book?

Summer Saturdays and December book up first. Quieter dates can frequently be booked at shorter notice. Send your date and we will check.

What happens in bad weather?

We cook under a gazebo, so rain is not a problem for the roast. A marquee, hall or barn for eating makes all the difference.

About the food

Rotisserie chicken

Rotisserie chicken is there for anyone who’d rather not have pork, and children normally like it too.

Halloumi and vegetable skewers (V)

Our vegetarian option is halloumi and vegetable skewers: squeaky, salty cheese with colourful veg, in a roll or on a plate.

Is a hog roast right for your wedding?

If your venue does its own catering, ask whether outside caterers are allowed for evening food. There may be a fee. Adding lamb, chicken, extra sides or china changes the price, so we list each one in the quote. Keeping it simple keeps it affordable.

Planning the cooking spot

It’s worth planning the cooking area in advance. The ideal spot has:

  • A way in for the roaster
  • Power for lights in the evening
  • Approval from the venue or marquee supplier

If you are unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think before you book.

Catered or do it yourself?

Buying in a cold buffet is another option, but nothing beats hot pork and crackling carved in front of you, especially outdoors.

Roasting a whole hog yourself is possible, but it takes hours of attention, from early set-up to carving at the end. With us catering, you get to be a host, not a cook.
