Choosing a hog roast caterer

Hog roast for events in Wimbledon, slow-roasted on site

Charity fundraisers in Wimbledon can use a hog roast to draw people in. Tell us about the event and we will suggest how it could work. On the menu are crackling, hog roast rolls and apple sauce, and typical bookings are for club events and festivals.

Events in Wimbledon range from street parties and school fairs to markets and festivals. Organisers normally need council permission for public spaces, and we need a pitch we can reach. The carving happens right in front of your visitors, so every roll gets hot pork and a piece of crackling, and nothing sits in a hot cabinet.

How we price a hog roast for your event

Every booking is priced individually, based on a few main things:

  • The serving time and how long we’re on site
  • The number of people
  • The journey to the venue
  • The date and time of year

Numbers make the biggest difference: the price per head usually falls as numbers rise, because the roaster, staff and travel cost much the same either way.

Details that help

We can quote more accurately with a few details. Here’s what’s useful:

  • A photo of the cooking area
  • The venue or postcode
  • Dietary requirements
  • Rules from the venue or landowner

For a quote, send us a few details: your date, your venue or postcode, how many people and any menu choices. Fill in our quote form.

Wimbledon questions

Can you come to a school fair in Wimbledon?

Yes, with the school’s permission. Send us the date and where the roaster would go.

Could you cook in Cannizaro Park?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, normally the council, and many parks do not allow cooking. Check with them first, and tell us what they say.

Can you do gluten-free?

Gluten-free rolls are available on request. Ask for the allergen list, as stuffing normally contains gluten.

Do you trade at village fêtes?

We love fêtes. Ask for details.

How long does the roast need?

It depends on the size of the hog and the weather, but it is several hours. We will confirm our arrival time when we quote.

Can we hire the machine and cook it ourselves?

Yes, we hire out the hog roast machine. We will confirm what comes with it and how to use it.

What comes with the hog roast?

Roast pork carved into soft rolls with sage and onion stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. You can add lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options, salads, coleslaw and potatoes.

How much room do you need?

Enough level ground outdoors for the roaster and a serving table under cover, and a way to wheel everything in. A photo helps.

How the day works

From setting up to the last roll, we look after the food, so you can get on with your event. Late-September events in Wimbledon lose the light at about 7:05pm, so evening trading needs lights.

  1. It starts with your event date, site and expected numbers.
  2. We check the pitch and any paperwork, then quote.
  3. On the day we set up under cover and get the hog on.
  4. We carve and serve through the agreed hours.
  5. We pack down, take our waste and leave the pitch clean.

How to prepare

  • Gather dietary requirements early
  • Name a contact for the day
  • Pick a flat, open area outside for cooking

Planning help

Space, access and the venue

A hog roast cooks outdoors for hours, so the spot matters, and a little planning goes a long way:

  • Event approval for hot-food traders
  • A vehicle route onto the pitch
  • Any paperwork the organisers need

Wimbledon is in London, within the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and access can be tight: let us know how we reach the cooking spot and where we can park.

If you are unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think.

Popular choices

DIY versus a catered hog roast

Timing is the tricky part of roasting your own: a whole hog takes hours, and it needs to be cooked through safely. If that sounds stressful, choose the catered option.

A DIY hog roast suits a relaxed party where someone enjoys cooking. For weddings and bigger events, a catered roast is usually easier.

Diets, allergies and alternatives

You will get allergen information for everything we serve. To help:

  • Let us know if many visitors are vegetarian
  • Signpost the stall clearly
  • Check other traders aren’t all selling pork
  • Stuffing normally contains gluten

We clear the pitch and take everything away.

Add coleslaw.

Planners, venues and businesses

Venues frequently have rules for outside caterers, from approved lists to where a gas roaster can go. Check early, and tell us what they ask for.

If you are planning an event on someone’s behalf, whether you are a planner, a PA or on a committee, tell us who our contact on the day will be. We’ll keep everyone in the loop.

  • Roasted on site for several hours, outdoors under cover
  • Our chef carves the pork, with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling on the side
  • Vegetarian and vegan choices, plus lamb or chicken if you like
  • Our team serves at your chosen time and clears up afterwards
