Bringing a hog roast to Ash

Ash is about 2 miles east of Aldershot, in Surrey. We set up the roaster at homes, halls, workplaces and venues in Ash. We cater 395 places across Surrey, from the larger towns to small villages. Our nearest city page is Guildford, about 6 miles away.

If guests are travelling by rail, the nearest station is Ash station, about 0.5 miles north-east. If you had Aldershot Park in mind, ask the council or landowner first: we cannot simply set up a roaster in a public park.

For events in GU12 and GU10, we just need to know where the roaster can cook and roughly how many guests. We can cater an event on streets such as Ash Church Road, Square Field Way and Littlefield Close or the roads around them, as long as there’s somewhere outside to cook. You’ll find Ash on the A331 and B3206, which makes the journey straightforward. For events just outside Ash, we cover Ash Green (1 mile east), Tongham (1 mile south-west), Ash Vale (1 mile north), Seale (2 miles south) and Aldershot (2 miles west). Within a short drive, we also cover Guildford (6 miles east), Woking (8 miles north-east), Camberley (6 miles north), Farnham (4 miles south-west), Egham (15 miles north-east) and Frimley (5 miles north).

A little further out are Ash Museum (within half a mile north-east) and Guildford Hospital (4.8 miles east). Open spaces near Ash include Rowhill Nature Reserve and Hog's Back.

  • Nearby schools include Ash Manor School (0.5 miles south-west) and The Connaught School (1 mile south-west)
  • Local pubs include The Dover Arms (0.6 miles north-east)
  • Other local spots include Seale and Tongham (1.8 miles south)

Should I cook it myself?

You could go for a cold buffet, but nothing beats hot pork and crackling carved in front of you, especially outdoors.

If you are confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You do the roasting and carving; we’ll confirm what comes with it when you ask.

Planners, venues and businesses

If you’re booking for a workplace, ask your facilities team about outside caterers and gas cooking. We will fit in with site rules.

For venues and planners, we can fit around your other suppliers, sharing timings and a site plan.

Diets, allergies and alternatives

Not everyone eats pork, so plan an alternative. Helpful tips:

  • Stuffing normally contains gluten, so ask for the allergen list
  • Put the menu on the invitation
  • Collect allergies with your RSVPs
  • We do not offer halal meat, so arrange that separately if it’s needed

We will agree a contact for the day, who can show us the cooking spot and pass on any changes.

Add lamb or chicken for a second roast.

The menu, dish by dish

Rotisserie chicken

Chicken from the rotisserie gives people a non-pork choice, turned until the skin is golden.

Rolls and gluten-free rolls

Everything goes into a soft roll, easy to eat standing up. Gluten-free rolls are available on request.

How the day works

People love watching the carving: the hog is carved in front of your guests, with crackling for everyone who wants it. By late September, sunset in Ash is around 7:05pm, and in December it’s nearer 3:55pm. For anything after that, plan lights for the serving area.

  1. You tell us the date, the address, rough numbers and when you’d like to eat.
  2. We check the date and the cooking area, then send a quote.
  3. We arrive well ahead, put the cover up and get the hog roasting.
  4. We carve and serve when you are ready to eat.
  5. We clear the serving area and pack away.

Getting ready for the day

  • Make sure the cooking area is away from walls, tents and trees
  • Send final numbers in good time
  • Have a covered area for eating in case of rain

  • How easy it is to reach the spot

Midweek and quieter months are frequently easier to book, and the menu you choose matters too. Tell us your budget and we will suggest what works.

Your questions about a hog roast in Ash

What’s the nearest station to Ash?

The closest is Ash station, roughly 0.5 miles away.

We’re gathering after a service at Church of St Peter: can you cater?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby with an outdoor spot for the roaster. Food is normally served at the reception venue rather than the church. Send us the address.

Do we need a big space?

Many gardens are big enough, as long as we can get the equipment in. Send us a picture.

How long does a hog roast take to cook?

It depends on the size of the hog and the weather, but it is several hours. You will know our arrival time in advance.

Can we choose catered or DIY?

You can have us cook, or hire the machine. Your quote will set out what’s included.

Where does the hog roast go?

Roughly the footprint of a gazebo or two, on level ground, well clear of walls, tents and branches. We’ll confirm the space with your quote.

How far ahead should we book?

Popular dates go early. But do ask even at short notice: use our quote form.

Can you roast in the rain?

We roast under cover, so the food isn’t affected. Your guests will want somewhere dry to eat.

  • Slow-roasted on site for hours, outdoors at your event
  • Carved by our chef into rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Not just pork: spit-roast lamb, chicken and vegetarian choices
  • Our team serves at your chosen time and clears up afterwards
