Choosing a hog roast caterer

A hog roast or other catering?

Compared with a plated meal, a hog roast doesn’t need a kitchen, which generally keeps the cost down. Published UK guides give a wide range for hog roast catering, from around £10 a head for a basic roll to £20 or more with sides and service. Every event gets its own quote, with everything listed.

Why book with us

  • A choice of salads and potatoes
  • Choices for people who don’t eat pork
  • Cooked on the day, low and slow
  • Self-contained: roaster, cover and serving kit

What a hog roast costs

The biggest factors are:

The menu, dish by dish

Rotisserie chicken

Chicken off the rotisserie, carved or jointed can be served in a roll or on a plate alongside the pork.

Salads, potatoes and coleslaw

Coleslaw is the natural partner for a pork roll, and salads and new potatoes work well on a plate.

FAQs for Keeper's Corner

How far is Keeper's Corner from London?

About 24 miles from central London.

Do you come out to small places like Keeper's Corner?

Not at all. We cater in villages and hamlets as well as towns. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

How do we prepare?

The agreed cooking area, access for our equipment and someone to meet us. We bring everything else.

Do we need to provide electricity?

The roaster runs on gas, so we don’t need mains power to cook. Power can help with lighting after dark.

Does the roaster have to be outside?

It cooks outside, under a gazebo, on a level spot. Serving indoors is generally fine if the venue is happy.

How far ahead should we book?

Summer Saturdays and December book up first. Quieter dates can often be booked at shorter notice. Send your date and we’ll check.

What meats can we have?

Pork is the classic, and you can add spit-roast lamb or rotisserie chicken. There are vegetarian and vegan options as well.

What happens when we hire a hog roast?

We bring the roaster, roast the hog on site for hours, then our chef carves it and our staff serve, in rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling.

Should I cook it myself?

If you’re confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You do the roasting and carving; we’ll explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

A barbecue is the other obvious choice, but someone has to stand at the grill all day. With a hog roast, one roast feeds everyone at once.

What happens on the day

We work to your timings. If the day runs behind, we can hold the cooked roast for a while before carving, so keep us posted on the day. Because the roast takes hours, daylight is worth planning: in Keeper's Corner, sunset is around 8:50pm in late May and 9:20pm in late June, while in December the light goes at about 3:55pm.

  1. Send us your date, numbers and address.
  2. We check the space and quote.
  3. We get the roaster going hours before you eat.
  4. The chef carves and the team fills rolls or plates.
  5. We pack away and leave you to it.

How to prepare

  • Keep the spot clear of buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches
  • Measure the narrowest gate or passage
  • Check there’s a route to wheel the equipment in, without steps
