Wedding hog roast in The City, slow-roasted on site

The carving station becomes a focal point: people gather round as the chef carves. It’s food and a bit of theatre. On the menu are spit-roast lamb, carved roast pork and salads, and we are regularly asked to cater weddings in a family garden and evening food after the first dance.

A wedding in a small place like The City often means a field, a barn or a family garden. That is where a hog roast shines: no kitchen needed, just an outdoor cooking spot. Tell us about lanes, gates and ground conditions. Let us know about allergies and dietary needs in advance, and we’ll give you the allergen information for every dish before you book.

No, we come to small places too. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

What’s the nearest station to The City?

The closest is Saunderton station, roughly 1.8 miles away.

What’s included?

The classic: pork in rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. Your quote lists any sides and extras.

When should we book?

As early as you can for summer weekends and December. Quieter dates can often be booked at shorter notice. Ask and we will check.

Lamb and chicken are both available alongside the hog.

Do you bring plates?

We supply plates as standard. China is available at an extra cost.

Can we have a hog roast as the main meal?

Many couples do exactly that, with lamb, chicken and vegetarian options alongside.

Can you do gluten-free?

Gluten-free rolls are available on request. Stuffing generally contains gluten, so check the allergen information.

Step by step

The roaster cooks outdoors, under a gazebo on level ground, away from buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches. We agree exactly where before the day. Evening food at a The City wedding often goes out just as the light fades: sunset is around 8:55pm in late May, 9:25pm at midsummer and 7:05pm in late September. Festoon lights by the carving station look lovely in the photos.

  1. Send us the date, venue and guest numbers.
  2. We confirm the date and the venue and send a price.
  3. We agree timings with your venue coordinator.
  4. The hog roasts through the afternoon; our chef carves on cue.
  5. We serve, tidy up and slip away.

How to prepare

Catered or do it yourself?

Catered or DIY? Catered means we do everything: roasting, carving, serving and clearing. With DIY hire, you do the work and save on staffing.

The hardest part of a DIY hog roast is timing: a whole hog takes hours, and it needs to be cooked through safely. If you’d rather not worry about it, let us cook.

For planners, venues and organisers

If the event is on someone else’s land, the landowner needs to agree to cooking and vehicles. Sort that first.

Organisers may ask for documents such as a risk assessment or gas safety information. Tell us what you need and we’ll tell you what we can send.

Where the roaster can go in The City

Planning the cooking spot is the key. A quick checklist:

  • Light near the carving station after dark
  • A route to wheel equipment to the spot
  • Permission for outside catering

Not sure about the cooking spot? Send us a picture and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

Diets, allergies and alternatives

With a bit of planning, dietary needs are easier to handle. A few tips:

  • Ask for gluten-free rolls for coeliac guests
  • Note which guests don’t eat pork, so we can add lamb, chicken or vegetarian options
  • If any guests need halal food, arrange it separately
  • Share the menu with your venue coordinator

If speeches overrun or the band starts late, we adjust. Just keep us informed.

Choose sides to make it a full meal.

About the food

Halloumi and vegetable skewers (V)

Our vegetarian option is halloumi and vegetable skewers: squeaky, salty cheese with colourful veg.

Salads, potatoes and coleslaw

Crunchy coleslaw suits roast pork, while salads and potatoes make a plated meal.

  • Roasted on site for several hours, outdoors under cover
  • Carved to order by our chef, with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Vegetarian and vegan choices, plus lamb or chicken if you like
  • Staff to serve at the agreed time, then clear away
